Arnold Arboretum

Lightning and Trumpet has been working with the Arnold Arboretum at Harvard University to expand and enrich their visitor experience. Each piece we have designed acts both individually and as one part of the Arboretum’s ongoing interaction with its community. Clear hierarchy provides essential information, while inviting (and rewarding) more intensive interaction.

We consolidated multiple publications into a suite of four season-specific maps that answer basic questions quickly, while providing more in-depth content to the curious visitor. Close collaboration with the Arboretum and thoughtful visitor testing led us to a design that facilitates exploration of the landscape—incorporating horticultural, historical, and wayfinding information in a way that is clear and engaging.

Installed at key destinations within the Arboretum, the permanent landscape panels are designed to encourage exploration without intruding upon the aesthetic experience of the landscape. They complement existing signage and publications, while expanding the visual language with added colors and illustrations.
